4 Foods That Keep Longer Than You’d Expect

Are you wanting some tips on keeping food fresher for longer while eliminating waste? Here are 4 different foods that last longer than you might expect, as well as ways to diminish food rot.

Apples

When left to rot, apples start to shrivel up, get bruised more easily, and eventually start to ferment. But there is a way that you can halt this progression and enjoy apples for much longer. Instead of keeping them on the counter in your typical fruit bowl you need to try making room for them in your crisper drawer. Keeping your apples cold slows down the fermentation process and can help them last as long as six to eight weeks.

Soup

Now you wouldn’t think that soup would stay fresh for a long period of time. Usually, we make enough for a meal and save a container of the remains to take to work the next day and that’s the end of it. But soup is a magical meal to make because you can freeze some soups up to 3 days after cooking. Be aware that some soups freeze better than others, though. For instance, don’t freeze potato soup. For some reason, the potatoes become slimy after sitting for a while. Soups that freeze well include chicken noodle soup, rice soups, and bean soups.

Nuts

If you are afraid to buy bulk bags of your favorite nuts, don’t be! Nuts have a very long shelf life, both raw and roasted. Most nuts have a pantry life of six months, keep well in the refrigerator for up to a year, and do well in the freezer for up to 2 years. So, go ahead and buy your big bag of nuts at your local bulk store. You might never have to buy a bag of nuts for 2 years.

Cabbage

Cabbage is one of the few leafy greens that you can keep in your refrigerator and use it little by little. Cabbage is low in water content and doesn’t mold or rot as easily as spinach or lettuce will. You can keep it whole and chop a bit off when needed or chop it up and store it in an airtight container. Cabbage can last for up to three weeks to two months depending on temperature and moisture conditions within your refrigerator.

Keeping your food fresh in your home is important for both saving money and cutting down waste. Use these four food tips as a guide on your next shopping trip. You will be able to plan your meals better, as well as enjoy food in your home for a longer period of time.
